Disclaimer: I received a copy of the We Choose Virtues character building homeschool curriculum in exchange for an honest review.
We started my son’s first year of homeschool preschool this year and one of the big things I wanted to incorporate was character training. Since he’s entered his threes he has started to get quite the little attitude and it’s become clear that I need to be more intentional with character training. This is one of those things that I think is really important as I strive to be a good mom in God’s eyes.
This school year we started off using another character training curriculum and I haven’t been entirely happy with it. I’m not quite sure yet, so I’m not going to mention the name of it. Because I still want to keep trying it out a little bit before I decide for sure.
However, one of the biggest issues I have with the other one is a lack of visuals and interactive activities. It’s a lot of reading and reciting. And my three year old doesn’t seem to get much out of that.
So I came across the We Choose Virtues character building curriculum and I loved the look of it. It looked so bright, colorful, and visually appealing, which is huge for a preschooler in order to keep their attention!
What is We Choose Virtues?
We Choose Virtues is a set of character building curriculum and tools for children ages 3-16. There are two different levels (ages 3-9 and 10-16). They also offer different products and kits depending on your situation, like ones for: Schools, Families, Homeschool, Church, and even versions in Spanish.
Each line of character coaching tools includes all kinds of things like posters, parenting cards, virtue cards, sing-alongs, and more. There’s a lot to choose from. But my favorite thing is that they also offer kits which include everything you need to get started, which makes getting started easy and no-stress. Here’s a preview of what each of them look like (click through each one to learn more):
Why I chose to try We Choose Virtues
I first off love that the We Choose Virtues curriculum is centered around scripture. This was big for me in choosing a character curriculum. Because I don’t just want to teach my kids to go through the motions of being good, I want to teach them WHY they should want to be good. So I love that about this curriculum. They do have a secular version of the curriculum as an option, but as a Christian mom, the scripture is essential for the type of character training I’d like to teach my children.
I also love that it’s bright and colorful. My son gets so DISTRACTED easily. But things that are eye catching and visual are easier for him to pay attention to as a preschooler.
The other thing I’m really looking forward to is having the posters to hang up each week as we focus a particular character trait. I think that’ll be a great visual for my son.
And I love the parenting cards too, which include activities you can do to help demonstrate the virtue to your children in everyday life. I love working on character traits like this through everyday activities (like how you can train kids in obedience just while cooking with them).
The additional teacher’s handbook and homeschool lesson plan files are also extremely helpful when planning on what to do and how exactly to go about teaching these virtues to your children using all of the amazing resources included.
What’s Included with We Choose Virtues
Each kit is a bit different. But the one I chose to go with is the Homeschool Kit for Kids. Here’s what’s included in that:
- Parenting Cards – These include activities that you can do throughout the day to demonstrate the character trait.
- Virtue Flash Cards – To help memorize each of the virtues.
- Kids Virtue Poster – A colorful and beautiful poster for quick reference of each virtue.
- Three Rules Poster – Beautiful poster with three simple, yet essential rules in any home: Obey, Be Kind, Be a Helper
- Kids of VirtueVille Posters – Comes in standard OR mini-size (depending on your package choice) And these are posters representing each of the virtues included.
- 100 Days of Virtue Chart + Butterfly Stickers – A fun poster to help kids track their progress in learning and applying each virtue.
- Virtue User Reviews Notepad – A notepad which helps you and your child to check in to see how they are doing on their character traits.
You also get several digital items that you can print out to further expand on the lesson:
- Homeschool Lesson Plan PDF
- Butterfly Award PDF
- Family Character Assessment PDF
- Kids of VirtueVille Coloring Pages PDF
- Bible Resource Cards
- Teacher’s Handbook
So as you can see, there’s a lot of great tools included! I’m so excited to get started with my son. It looks like it’s going to really help me to teach him these valuable character traits that he needs to learn.
